Synagogues of Southern Transylvania
Performed: Julie Dawson (concept and Documentation) şi Christian Binder (Photos)
Following the Holocaust and mass emigration Hebrew population in Romania, many synagogues in our country are in various states of disrepair and decay. This photo exhibition aims to illustrate their current status, interesting for the current period is Romania. Thanks to sponsors and non-governmental organizations abroad, these synagogues enjoyed or enjoy restorations and changes in cultural centers. Some, few, again began to conduct religious services, while others serve purely commercial purposes. In fine, others remained completely abandoned, although situated mostly in central city areas, producing a disturbing image and showing carelessness or indifference to their past communities, and reluctance in the past to assimilate multiculturalism.
The questions are numerous. What will become of these buildings, Now it can be used again? Those cities will take responsibility for their maintenance? How can they be integrated into sustainable urban plans? And how many and degradatele built synagogues - many historical and architectural value - in a systematic and comprehensive plan recognition and remembrance of a once vibrant cultures as part of the social reality of Romania.
We welcome you to our exhibition,
Julie Dawson and Christian Binder
