Romanian National Commission for UNESCO will organize at Bucharest, during 13 – 18 may 2019, the 2nd edition of UNESCO Academy of Young Women, with the theme "The role of mass media in promoting women's rights”. Project, organized with the support of UNESCO and in partnership with Editorial group Here – Romania and coordinated by expert Daniela Popescu, will also be the occasion for a collaboration with Romanian Television and with the European Federation of Centres, UNESCO Clubs and Associations.
Following the success of the first edition of UNESCO Academy of Young Women, held in August 2017, which ended with a list of project ideas, the initiators' attention was focused on mass media, which have a great power in modern society - that of information, sensitizes her, to influence broad categories of people, to alleviate stereotypes, to shape mindsets. At the previous edition, the participants asked themselves“what can i do in the community, in my country, to contribute to solving the problems related to the status of women and bring about a change for the better?”. After two years, the organizers find that the question is just as current and take it again targeting a single area, that of journalism of different types, also using non-formal education methods and experiential learning. This time, 25 of young journalists from 10 European states will familiarize themselves with the topic, will follow at the headquarters of the UNESCO National Commission, Here and TVR practical journalism courses and workshops, photography and social media, with specialized trainers.
De ce The role of mass media in promoting women's rights? Because in all European states there is legislation and institutions that aim to ensure gender equality and offer equal chances in life to both men, as well as women. But the statistics show that in everyday life there is still a lot to be done for the provisions of the laws to be applied correctly, so that the stereotypes related to the role of women are alleviated and women can fully value their talent, the preparation, the ability to dialogue, of performance.
In the spirit of UN-UNESCO regulations and recommendations, which places equality of opportunity among the priorities of the world today and as a factor of human progress in the next decade, the initiators count on the receptivity and talent of young journalists and propose them as, inspired and motivated by those they will meet in Bucharest, to make impact materials, which will open new windows to a future where women have a more meaningful voice in society, to be valued at their fair value for everything they do, to be involved in decision-making at the level of society. A UNESCO Academy magazine will finally synthesize the contributions and ideas of young people.
Last but not least, Through this project, the National Commission of Romania for UNESCO supports the plea for gender equality that our country promotes during the current mandate at the presidency of the Council of the European Union.
